January 11, 1783

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, Jan. 11, 1783  Page 2 has an interesting bit: "The latest account from Philadelphia mention that the idea of admitting the colony of Vermont as a fourteenth state had been revived, and was then agitating in Congress." Vermont would become the 14th state but not until 1791. This is followed by other news concerning completing the treaty of peace to end the Revolutionary War. Most of the space is taken up with a lengthy letter signed in type: B. Franklin, Minister Plenipotentiary from the United States of America at the Court of France, which is supporting of fellow ambassador Silas Deane against charges of financial impropriety Congress has accused him of.
The back page has a report which would infer the war isn't quite over yet: "...a report prevails that they contain the ultima ratio of the British Court for the continuance of the war, which is to be prosecuted with the utmost vigour till the demands of the belligerent powers are lessened to a system consistent with the general dignity of all parties."
Eight pages, 8 1/4 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.
