Beauregard's letter to Gen. Grant, asking leave to bury his dead, that the field which our brave fellows fought so stoutly and won so nobly should be called Shiloh and not Pittsburgh Landing." It continues: "For Shiloh means deliverance; and on that field of Shiloh we believe that the deliverance of our country was really accomplished. The field of Shiloh be it then.  We thank thee, Jew, for teaching us that word."
