July 20, 1945

THE NEW YORK TIMES, July 20, 1945

* USS Ticonderoga - Essex-class aircraft carrier
* Japanese kamikazes - South Japanese Islands

Near the bottom of the front page is a two column headings that reads: "Carrier Ticonderoga Back in Fight; Lost 144 in Two Suicide Bombings" First report coverage continues on page 3 with 2 related photos. This is on the Japanese kamikaze attacks on the USS Ticonderoga during the attacks on the South Japanese islands. Reporting on many disasters such as this were kept from the public, sometimes for many months, until the family members of the killed were all notified, giving the reason for this late report. Still a first report. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day throughout with much more on World War II. Complete in 34 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Nice condition.
