ILLUSTRATED NEWS, New York, May 14, 1853

* Rare Jewish synagogue illustration
* Congregation Chasam Sopher
* Judaica - Jews

An illustrated newspaper formatted much like Harper's Weekly, but which began several years earlier. Among the many illustrations within is one which is quite desirable: "Interior View of the Jewish Synagogue, Clinton St." which also has a rather brief descriptive article next to it. This "Rodolph Sholom" synagogue was located on Clinton between Houston and Stanton Streets in lower Manhattan but is now the congregation Chasam Sopher. Google.com notes: "This is the oldest building in Manhattan built as a synagogue and still used for worship. It was built by a German-Jewish congregation known as Rodeph Sholom."
Other illustrations include: "Palanquin Traveling in South America" "Railroad Accident Near Chicago" "Interior View of the New York Hippodrome" "View of the Ruins of the Late Fire at Boston" and more.
Sixteen pages, nice condition.
