December 17, 1862

THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio, Dec. 17, 1862  Among the column heads on the Civil War are: "The Most Heinous Act of the Abolition Congress" which was the admission of West Virginia into the Union (see photos); "The Last Dodge Worse than the First--The President Convicted Out of the Mouth of His Own Friends". Most of a pg. is taken up with: "The War Power Of the President". Also: "The Effect of Free Negro Labor Upon Our Country" "The Kind of Men Abolitionists Elect to Office" "From The Battle-field--Horrible Suffering" which is from the Battle of Perryville; and so much more.
Eight pages, the lower right corner is missing and does cause some minor loss of text on some pages, otherwise is in very good condition.

Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", it opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It insisted that slavery could not be prohibited by law. So obnoxious was this paper to unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
