November 24, 1939

THE NEW YORK TIMES, November 24, 1939

* Macy's annual Thanksgiving Day Parade
* Pinocchio, Tin Man, & Santa Claus' debut
* A 'sober' Uncle Sam captures NYT photo

Page 19 has: "ODD RUBBER FOLK STAGE GAY PARADE", with subheads: "Throngs of Spectators Line Streets as Macy's Annual Procession Files Past," "SANTA STEALS THE SHOW," and "He is the Largest Helium-Filled Character Among Marchers - 2,500 Police on Guard."
Also included within the article are mentions of other floats including Donald, Mickie, and Minnie. The corresponding photo of Uncle Sam with the caption: "UNCLE SAM ON THE MARCH IN MACY'S PARADE," with the sub-caption: "Stepping high, wide and handsome over Columbus Circle yesterday." Of note is that Uncle Sam debut the previous year was marked by nearly uncontrolled movement, which prompted many to jest that he must have been "under the influence."
Other news of the day and holiday-themed advertisements are found throughout.
The issue is in very good condition. While it is believed to be complete in 42 pages, it is being sold for the Macy's Day Parade coverage. Rag (library) edition.
