November 01, 1942

THE NEW YORK TIMES, November 1, 1942

* USS Aircraft Carrier Hornet sunk
* Battle of Santa Cruz Islands

The front page has a five column headline: "U. S. CARRIER SUNK IN SOLOMONS" with subheads that include: "DAMAGED SHIP LOST" Carrier Badly Crippled Monday Later Sunk by U.S. Warship" and more with related map. (see) The name of the carrier lost was not known at the time, probably because of military secrecy, but history shows this was indeed the USS Hornet (CV-8). Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day with much more on World War II. Complete in 70+ pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. A liitle spine residue from disbinding, nice condition.
