June 27, 1920

THE NEW YORK TIMES, sports & financial section only, June 27, 1920.

* Earliest report on Lou Gehrig ? (rare)
* His high school team wins title
* Future New York Yankees star

The sport's section contains a somewhat discrete page 2 report and the line score of a high school championship game between the New York City School of Commerce and Lane Tech of Chicago.
The star of the game was a 17-year old boy named Lou Gehrig who hit a grand-slam home run over the right field wall of Cubs Park (now known as Wrigley Field). Gehrigs home run provided the margin of victory as his team defeated the opposition, 12-8.
Note that in the report Gehrig was touted ...as the Babe Ruth of high schools of New York. Ruth and Gehrig, of course, would eventually become teammates playing for the New York Yankees.
Likely the first time that Gehrig, a high school junior, received national attention, and certainly one of the very earliest mentions of Lou Gehrig in a newspaper. A great report marking the earliest beginnings of an amazing and enduring career.
Complete sport's & financial section only with 12 pages, irregular along the spine, long piece torn away at the right margin of pages 3 & 4, light toning, otherwise good.
