NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, March 28, 1835 A page 2 article announces the creation of three new mints within the United States, these being the first to be created outside of Philadelphia. As the report notes: "...there is to be one branch at the city of New Orleans for the coinage of gold and silver; one branch at the town of Charlotte, in Mecklenburg county, in the state of North Carolina, for the coinage of gold only; and one branch at or near Dahlonega, in Lumpkin county, in the state of Georgia, also for the coinage of gold only..." with further particulars as to the allotment of funds to creaming these branch mints (see).
Just above this report is an interesting item which sings the praises of Henry Clay, of Kentucky (see). The balance of the issue is taken up with a wide range of news reports including much on politics. A few items are headed: "Mr. Calhoun" with a letter signed by him in type: J. C. Calhoun; "Gov. Branch & Gen. Jackson" "The Approaching Comet" & much more.
Eight pages, 6 1/4 by 9 1/2 inches, scattered foxing, generally nice condition.
This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
