November 29, 1861

WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, Nov. 29, 1861  This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
The entire front page is taken up with the: "PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE To the Congress of the Confederate States" which carries over a bit to the back page where it is signed in type: Jefferson Davis (see for portions). This would seem to be Jeff Davis' annual state-of-the-union address to the Confederates states, with most of his remarks focused on the Civil War. Terrific to have this report in a Confederate newspaper. Pgs. 2 & 3 have various items on the Civil War including reports headed: "The Danville Connection" "The Militia" "The Continuance of the War" "A Generous Act" "The Convention" "Honor to Whom Honor is Due" "The News" "The Rebellion in Tennessee" and a bit more. The back page has "Murder of Hon. Josiah M. Anderson" and "The Reported Burning of Cotton" along with the conclusion of Jeff Davis' speech and a wealth of ads.
Four pages very nice, clean condition.
An opportunity for not only a very rare Confederate title, but one with some fine content.
