MIDDLESEX GAZETTE, Middletown, Connecticut, Nov. 16, 1804 Pages 2 & 3 contain the state-of-the-union address of the President headed: "President's Message", signed in type: Th. Jefferson. A portion of his address deals with the new Louisiana Territory just purchased from France the previous year. One paragraph begins: "With the Indian tribes established within our newly acquired limits, I have deemed it necessary to open conferences for the purpose of establishing a good understanding & neighbourly relations between us. So far as we have yet learned we have reason to believe that their dispositions are generally favorable and friendly..." (see photos for portions). Four pages, never-trimmed margins, bit of foxing, irregular at the blank spine, good condition.
