Prohibition becomes official...

Item # 647198

January 30, 1919

NEW YORK TIMES, January 30, 1919

* Prohibition becomes official
* Beer & liquor banned

On January 29 the 18th Amendment to the Constitution is ratified when Nebraska agrees to the Prohibition measures. Prohibition of alcohol throughout the United States will come into effect January 16, 1920.
This front page has a 3 line, 1 column heading announcing this historic event: "'DRY' AMENDMENT PROCLAIMED PART OF CONSTITUTION" with subheads: "State Department Notifies Nation of Adoption as Fundamental Law" "In Effect Jan. 16 Next" "New York and Vermont Finally Pass Resolution for Ratification" & more. This is a very significant issue reporting an event which would lead America into a very tumultuous, crime-ridden era.
Twenty-two pages, some spine wear and staining, a little other margin wear, otherwise good.
