March 19, 1862

THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio, March 19, 1862

* President Abraham Lincoln
* General John C. Fremont

Among the articles are: "Official War Orders" by the President, signed in type: Abraham Lincoln, plus his: "General War Order No. 2" and "...No. 3", each also signed in type: Abraham Lincoln.
Also of interest is Lincoln's letter to General Fremont concerning the latter's controversial Proclamation, and note the very anti-Lincoln preface the editor included (see).
Other items include: "General Halleck on the Thieving Contractors" "...Letter from the Governor of Georgia--Preparing for the Future" "From Fort Henry" and much more.
Eight pages, very nice condition.

Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", this newspaper opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It insisted that slavery could not be prohibited by law. So obnoxious was this paper to Unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
