THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, May, 1753 This issue begins with: "Some Account of the New Roads in Surry from Westminster Bridge" which is accompanied by a very nice foldout map measuring 10 by 14 1/2 inches, showing the south side of the River Thames but includes the Tower of London as well as portions of Westminster, plus both London Bridge & Westminster Bridge (see photos). There is also a full page plate showing 28 "Reliques at the Church of Notre Dame at Aix la Chapelle" with a related article (see photos).A full page is taken up with "A View & Description of the Village of Portici" in Italy, beneath which were found the foundations of the city of Herculaneum. Includes an engraving of the town (see photos). Other items include: "Description of Lapland" which takes over 2 1/2 pages; "Methods of Inoculation" "An Account of the Pearl Fishery at Panama" which notes: "...The masters of the Negroes choose for the fishery those who are good swimmers and well breath'd...18 or 20 Negroes under the direction of an overseer..." with more. Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" with the latest news reports of the day.
Contains both of the full plates called for.
Complete in 48 pages, 5 3/4 by 9 inches, full title/contents page with an engraving of St. John's Gate. This has unevenly trimmed pages with wide margins, otherwise in very good condition.
A very nice magazine from before the French & Indian War with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
