September 30, 1927

* Babe Ruth hits 59th and 60th home runs (record)
* It is BEST to have reports from the city where an event occurred

THE NEW YORK TIMES, A very notable pair of issues dated Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 1927 reporting Babe Ruth tying the home run record (his own), then breaking it the next day, a record that would stand until Roger Maris hit 61 in 1961.

September 30: The sports page has a banner headline announcing: "Fans Acclaim Ruth as He Hits Two Homers and  ties Own Record; Cards Lose". The first column heads include: "Ruth Hits 2, Equals 1921 Homer Record" "Slams 58th in First Frame, then Gets 59th in Fifth with 3 Men on Bases" with more. There is also a very nice photo captioned: "Ruth's Most Serious Home Run Face" beneath with is a lengthy chart noting the dates & locations of each of his home runs in 1921 and 1927.

October 1: The sports page has a banner headline: "Home Run Record Falls as Ruth Hits 60th; Pirates Lose; Giants Out of Race". Also column heads: "Ruth Crashes 60th To Set New Record" "Babe Makes It a Real Field Day by Accounting for All Runs In 4-2 Victory" "1921 Mark of 59 Beaten" "Fans Go Wild..." and more (see).

Great to have both notable reports in the New York Times, home of the Yankees & the city where the events happened. Both issues are complete in 52 and 40 pages respectively, bit irregular at the blank spine from disbinding, nice condition.
