January 10, 1865

THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, January 10, 1865

* Rare Confederate title
* Civil War nears the end

Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865 just one day before Lincoln was assassinated. This rare Confederate title is from the latter months of the Civil War. The front page is mostly taken up with ads but does have: "Local & State News" "Bloody Work In Polk" "Later From the North" "From Richmond" "From Charleston" "Raiders in Mississippi" and a few other items.
The back page has: "Severe on Congress & the President" "Suspension of the Habeas Corpus" "Office Regulations" "Confederate Valor" "The Root Of The Evil" "and a few other items. One of the better reports is headed: "From Savannah" from shortly after it fell to the Yankees, mentioning that: "...The Mayor, the Alderman...& corporations are going on, all having agreed to submit to the 'lawful authority of the United States', and in fact, Savannah, accepting the situation, may be said to have returned to the Union..." with more.
This issue is complete as a single sheet newspaper and is in very nice condition.
