April 28, 1768

THE PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE, Philadelphia, April 28, 1768

* Rare colonial title
* Trade tensions w/ England
* Pre Revolutionary War

Just a few years previous this newspaper was owned by Ben Franklin, who purchased it in the late 1720's. Almost the entire front page is taken up with an historical account of the trade relations between England and America, prefaced with: "As the cause of the present ill humour in America & of the resolutions taken there to purchase less of our manufactures, does not seem to be generally understood, it may afford some satisfaction to your readers if you give them the following short historical state of facts." but the report is far from "short" (see for beginning).
Page 2 has a letter from London beginning: "We have the satisfaction of informing you that from the present appearance of things, the interest of the Colonies is here considered to be more free from enemies than for some time past..." (see). Other news of the day & a wealth of ads, including two illustrated ship ads & several runaway reward ads.
Four pages, handsome coat-of-arms engraving in the masthead, very nice condition.
