A very significant issue, as the sports page (pg. 13) has a noteworthy report with one column heads: "Yankees Win With Gehrig, DiMaggio Out" "Lou Now a Bench Warmer After Playing 2,130 Consecutive Ball Games" "Made Several Records". The significant report includes: "Fifteen years of major league campaigning and 2130 consecutive ball games have taken their toll and today the Iron Horse of baseball has grown rusty and creaky in the joints. Gehrig signaled his own passing as a major league star when he asked Joe McCarthy to bench him...".
Further on the report notes: "...Best known of all his marks, or course, is that consecutive game streak, a record that may stand for all time. Among his other records..." and what follows is a list of notable baseball records (see), with a prophetic statement as well: "It is records like these that eventually will put him among the immortals of baseball's hall of fame at Cooperstown...".
A very significant issue on the end of Lou Gehrig's baseball career.
