January 05, 1858

LONG ISLAND DEMOCRAT, Jamaica, Queens County, Long Island, January 5, 1858   In addition to the regular four page newspaper--which features on the front page the "New Years' Address of the Carrier of the Long Island Democrat" which takes up 2 1/2 columns--this issue includes a separate, single sheet broadside titled: "Long Island Democrat---Extra" which is entirely taken up with the "Governor's Message", signed in type by the governor, John A. King. This broadside is blank on the reverse.
The "regular" issue is typical of most newspapers of the day, including both news reports of a local and more regional nature, and a wealth of advertisements, many of which are illustrated.
The regular issue is somewhat irregular at the spine with some minor tears at the edges, with never-trimmed margins, and the broadside is in very nice condition.
