Samuel Johnson refutes the claims of the American Congress...

Item # 646074

March 16, 1775

THE MIDDLESEX JOURNAL & EVENING ADVERTISER, London, March 16, 1775  Over half of page 2 is taken up with one of 7 or 8 installments of: "Taxation No Tyranny; An Answer to the Resolutions & Address of the American Congress. By Dr. Johnson". A fascinating piece to read. In his work (his points made in the entire set, not in this single issue) he makes 4 points: that American are able to bear taxation; every adult pays taxes; American have no proof that Parliament ever ceded to them exemption from obedience; and that American rebels are hypocrites. See this hyperlink for the full text of the response by Johnson.
Four pages, very nice condition.
