October 18, 1861

WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, Oct. 18, 1861  Here is an issue of a rare Confederate title held by only four institutions in the United States. The front page has: "The Victory in Western Virginia--Address of Gen. Jackson to His Soldiers", signed in type: Henry R. Jackson. A page 2 ad endorses "Jefferson Davis Of Mississippi" for President and "Alex. H. Stephens, Of Georgia" for Vice President.
Page 2 also has the "Roll of the Confederate Stars" under Capt. G. C. Stowe. On the back page are the words of poem entitled: "The Confederate Flag". The poem begins: "Flag of the South! Flag of the Free! Thy stars shall cheer each eye Thy folds a sacred banner be, To all beneath our sky...".
Has much more war-related content. First leaf has a hole in unrelated content, above the Jackson letter is a group of small ink spots, some foxing, some in the mentioned content.
