July 24, 1861

DAILY DISPATCH, Richmond, Virginia, July 24, 1861  Not only a newspaper from the Confederate states, but from the capital of the Confederacy. Given the date, it is not surprising that the content on pages 2 & 3 contain much on the historic Battle of Bull Run, the first major conflict of the Civil War. The Confederate reporting tells of an overwhelming Southern victory, with column heads including: "The Great Victory" "Increasing Excitement" "Action of the Confederate Congress" "Account From Washington" "We have Met the Enemy & They are Ours! " "The Federals Acknowledge Their Defeat!" "Awful Slaughter of Troops!" "Ellsworth's 'Pet Lambs' Cut To Pieces!" "All The Federal Batteries Taken" "Gloom in Washington & Evident Apprehensions of an Invasion" "A Glorious Victory For the Southern Cause" being among the more dramatic heads we have found on Bull Run, or Manassas (see photos).
There is actually much more reporting on war events in this issue but they pale in comparison to the Bull Run coverage. Page 3 has an editorial headed "The President's Return" beginning: "President Davis returned to Richmond last evening...He described the brilliant movement of Gen. Johnston from Winchester to Manassas...". Many other items as well. Great to have this content in a newspaper from the capital of the Confederacy.
Complete as a 4 page issue, never bound nor trimmed, various foxing, wear at the margins and the central fold with an archival mend across pg. 2 with almost no loss & not affecting mentioned reports. Some printing creases to pg. 3 in the heads do not cause any loss.
