DAILY DISPATCH, Richmond, Virginia, July 23, 1861 Not just a newspaper from the Confederate states, but from the capital of the Confederacy. Certainly the key content in this issue is on page 3 with a heading: "The Great Battle At Stone Bridge" "The President's Official Dispatch". This was the battle of Bull Run, or Manassas, the first major battle of the Civil War. The report begins: "The city was intensely excited yesterday & a deep anxiety to learn further particulars of the battle fought on Sunday last near Manassas Junction...About midday it was ascertained that the President had officially communicated the news of the victory to the War Department & the following was posted on the bulletin boards:..." and what follows is the text of the document signed in type: Jeff. Davis, and prefaced with details of the battle (see). This is followed by: "Still Later" which has more details on this notable battle (see). And page 2 has a report which reports on Bull Run as well, headed: "Sunday's Work--Destruction of Scott's Regular Army" (see).
Also in this issue are: "The War In Missouri" "The Sick Soldiers" "The Call for Volunteers" and more. There are many war-related reports on the front page as well, plus 2 illustrated reward ads for "Runaways" (see).
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, some wear at folds causing minor loss & some perforation & small holes at fold junctures, foxing to a quadrant of the front page.
