Most of the ftpg. is taken up with a terrific & lengthy :"Address of the Confederate Congress - An Appeal to the Southern People" which begins: "Fellow Citizens: The result of the Peace Commission is known to the country. the hopes of those who have hitherto believed that an honorable termination might be put to the war by negotiation have been rudely disappointed...". It goes on to encourage the people of the South to soldier on, noting: "...But the enemy has already put forth his utmost strength...He has strained his energies to their utmost limit...Let us stand firm. Let us be calm & resolute. Let us show that our faith is in our cause..." & more. Also of significance is: "Special Message from President Davis to the Confederate Congress" signed in type: Jefferson Davis.
Among other articles are letters between Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, letters from U.S. Grant, "War News of the Week" "Elegant & Characteristic Speech of President Lincoln" & much more.
Eight pages, never-trimmed margins, scattered foxing, good condition.
Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", this newspaper opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It insisted that slavery could not be prohibited by law. So obnoxious was this paper to Unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
