THE CLEVELAND LEADER, Ohio, Sept. 20, 1881 First column heads on the front page announce the death of President James A. Garfield with: "DEAD !" "The President's Heroic Struggle Ended at Last!" "The Assassin's Bullet Completes His Fatal Work!" "After Eighty Days of Suffering His Released Spirit Takes Its Flight to Its Home in Heaven!" "His Death Occurs Suddenly at 10:35 P.M." "His Faithful Wife Present at His Bed" & more. Included are two reports about his final struggle and various bulletins announcing Garfield's death.
There are a few related reports on page 2 and page 4 has an editorial headed: "Our Dead President!"
In recognition of Garfield's death all columns on all pages are black-bordered. Great to have this report in a newspaper from Garfield's native state, and not far from his home in Mentor, Ohio.
Complete in 8 pages, never bound nor trimmed, three folds with foxing at the folds, some perforation at the fold junctures.
