NEW-YORK EVENING POST, Feb. 3, 1832

* Rare Jim Bowie mention before the Alamo

Page 2 has an extract of a letter with details of a fight with the Indians at San Saba. The letter states in part: "...Mr. Rowie [sic] arrived here last night from San Saba, having had a fight with 160 Indians on the 21st November....He fought from 8 oclock in the morning with only five men...til half past 6 oclock. P. M.--saw fall 21 Indians, mostly Cadoes...". Also details on a second engagement while returning to Bexar resulting in the death of 23 Taucacana Indians. There is another report on an expedition against the Tahuakanos Indians mentioning: "Permission has been granted by the Political Authorities of the country, to Mr. James Bowie to make an expedition against this horde of thieves and marauders of our frontier. The present is believed to be a favorable moment to strike a final blow...as they have lately been considerably damaged by an expedition from Bexar...and afterwards in a desperate fight with Mr. James Bowie...". Very uncommon to have a report about Bowie prior to his participation at the Battle of the Alamo.
Four pages, a bit irregular at the margins, otherwise good condition.
