July 08, 1876

THE DAILY MEMPHIS AVALANCHE, Tennessee, July 8, 1876

* General George Custer
* Battle of Little Bighorn
* Indians massacre

The front page has a report on the Custer massacre, with one column heads: "The Recent Slaughter" "Mourning Among the Indians--Volunteers Offering, Joe Shelby Among the Number" "Excitement Over the News". Part of the text notes: " ...opinion expressed generally is in favor of whipping the Indians into subjugation. They believe this is the only way to secure peace. Much regret is expressed over the fate of General Custer & the men who were killed...Joe O. Shelby, a noted Confederate General....sent the following telegram to President Grant...'Gen. Custer has been killed. We, who once fought him, no propose to avenge him..." and a bit more (see).
Complete in four pages, a mended repair to the front leaf but not close to the Custer content, otherwise in very nice condition.
