THE INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE & THE UNIVERSAL ADVERTISER, Boston, Dec. 11, 1777

* Rare Revolutionary War title from America

A nice feature of the masthead is a great engraving taken after one done earlier by Paul Revere, showing a patriot soldier with a sword in one hand and a scroll reading "Independence" in the other (see).
Page 2 has a lengthy letter which examines, in part, the situation in America. One bit notes: "...What foundation have we, my Lords! for our claims over America? What right to persist in such cruel and vindictive measures against that loyal, respectable people? They say you have no right to tax them without their consent. They say truly, representation and taxation must go together; they are inseparable..." with more.
Page 3 begins with a report: "Our new is not very material; the enemy left Ticonderoga & its appendages with great precipitation indeed--burnt all the houses, barracks, hospital, and every thing burnable; left 40 pieces iron ordnance broke and spiked...Several boats were found near Mount Independence sunken...about the 20th of November our people evacuated the fort at Red Bank..." with more.
Another item mentions: "...we learn that Fort Independence was taken on Monday last by the troops under the command of Major-General Putnam, together with all the troops and stores therein, with very little loss on our side. And, that an attack was to be made on New York the next day..." There is then a Resolve from congress: "That the thanks of Congress...in behalf of the inhabitants of the Thirteen United States be presented to Major General Gates, Commander in Chief in the Norther department, and to Majors General Lincoln sand Arnold...for their brave and successful efforts in support of the independence of their country, whereby an army of the enemy...had been totally defeated...at Bennington...another repulsed with loss & disgrace from Fort Schuyler, and the main army of 6000 men under Lieut. Gen. Burgoyne after being beaten in different actions...on the 17th day of October last to Major General Gates..." with more (see).
A report of the: "Gentleman are chose by the General Assembly of this states as Delegates to serve in the Continental Congress...John Hancock, Samuel Adams, John Adams, Robert T. Paine..." and more (see).
Four pages, a bit of loss to a lower corner due to a paper-making flaw (not damage) affects 3 words in a ftpg. inconsequential article and  a page 2 ad, otherwise quite nice condition.
