August 26, 1779

THE INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE & THE UNIVERSAL ADVERTISER, Boston, August 26, 1779

* Rare Revolutionary War title from America
* Battle of Fort Freeland - Central Pennsylvania

A nice feature of the masthead is a great engraving taken after one done earlier by Paul Revere, showing a patriot soldier with a sword in one hand and a scroll reading "Independence" in the other (see).
The ftpg. is taken up with a fine account of the Battle of Grenada from during the Revolutionary War, between the British & the French fleets. It would later be described as: "the most disastrous ... that the British Navy had encountered since Beachy Head, in 1690." The reporting carries over to pg. 2 where is also: "Admiral Byron's account of his Naval Engagement with Count D'Estaing...".
Page 2 also has several war reports, a few bits noting: "The enemy have lately contracted their lines & are fortifying Governor's Island and the Narrows...We have accounts that the enemy are fortifying the Narrows near Sandy Hook. They have drawn their main army over Kingsbridge..." and "Head Quarters of the American grand army is at West Point. The right wing is commanded by Major-General Putnam...army enjoys the greatest degree of health & is in high spirits." Then a letter from an officer in General Gates army which reports on the: "...success of our arms. His Excellency having formed a plan to surprize the garrison at Howles' Hook, it was accordingly, the night before last, carried into execution by Major Lee who effectually surprised and took the garrison...". Then a letter to General Sullivan dated at Northumberland, Pa., beginning: "The enemy yesterday made themselves masters of Freeland's fort on the West branch of the Susquehannah, upon terms of capitulation...." with a bit more. This was the Battle of Fort Freeland, near Watsontown, Pennsylvania.
The top of pg. 3 begins: "Extract of a letter from...Fish-Kill...Since my last I have had the following important articles of intelligence from his Excellency General Washington...that the French have given the English a most intolerable drubbing in the West Indies..." which refers to the Battle of Granada (see above).
Four pages, tow minor tape stains at blank margins, generally in very nice condition. A handsome issue for display given the patriotic engraving in the masthead.
