February 24, 1862

DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, Feb. 24, 1862  Not only is this a great Confederate newspaper, but it is from the capital of the Confederacy, and as such contains a great wealth of the latest news and battle reports.
Perhaps the most significant content in this issue is the content relating to the establishment of the Southern Confederacy, as the Confederate Constitution and Presidency are declared permanent and no longer provisional. Going hand-in-hand with this is the inauguration of Jefferson Davis as the President of the Confederacy, with most of the last column on the front page taken up with text on the "Inaugural Ceremonies" and the beginning of the actual: "Inaugural Address" which carries over to take most of a column on page 2 (see for portions). Following this is: "House of Representatives--Resumed".  This is simply terrific text to have in a newspaper from the capital of the Confederacy--the city where Davis was inaugurated!
The lengthy editorial has much comment on Jefferson Davis' address, beginning: "The Inaugural Address is a well written document, but does not require or invite much comment. It throws no light on the real condition of the country, & gives no indication of the President's probable policy..." with much more.
This issue has much more on the war, including: "Defensive War" "Reported Capture of Savannah" "Movements and Spirit of the War" and some significant content on Fort Donelson with: "Details of the Fall of Fort Donelson" "Further Particulars" and "How the News of the Fall of Fort Donelson Was Received in New York". Page 3 includes: "The Senatorship of Georgia" "The Inauguration" "Furloughed Soldiers" "Latest Northern News" and it also contains: "Proclamation By The President" signed in type by: Jefferson Davis, which begins: "The termination of the Provisional Government offers a fitting occasion again to present ourselves in humiliation, prayer & thanksgiving before that God who has safely conducted us through our first year of national existence..." (see).
The back page is mostly taken up with many Acts of the Confederate Congress.
Complete in four pages, never bound nor trimmed (desired), very nice condition. A great issue with some significant content.
