THE PENNSYLVANIA JOURNAL & WEEKLY ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, March 22, 1783 It is possible two front page advertisements have more significance than the content in this issue. One is a rather large ad for "Haym Salomons", the noted Jewish financier. Salomon was a Jewish emigrant from Poland, imprisoned in 1778 by the British for aiding the Revolutionaries and was condemned to death, but he escaped to Philadelphia. There he started a successful brokerage business. He aided Robert Morris in obtaining loans from France and pledged his own fortune to the new government to maintain its credit. Salomon was never recompensed and he died impoverished. Also on the front page is a nice ad headed: "Broker's Office by ISAAC FRANKS..." with much detail. Franks was a noted Jewish financier & served under Washington during the Revolutionary War.
Page 2 has a brief item noting: "Whatever opinions the public may have of Mr. Secretary Townsend's letter to the Lord Mayor, the whole College breathes the language of peace, & positively affirms that the most solemn assurances of it may every day be expected from Paris." A page 3 item notes: "...it is reported in New Jersey that New York was immediately to be evacuated, that Sir Guy Carleton & General Robinson were called home; & that the troops were to go to the West Indies under the command of General Gray...".
Four pages, very large & handsome engraving in the masthead, a bit irregular at the spine, generally nice condition.
