Broadside on the siege of Lisle...
Item # 644793
September 25, 1708
Here is a very rare broadside on the siege of Lisle (or Lille) in 1708, with the heading reading: "Earlly this Morning Came in a Mail from Holland, which brought the following Advices." above which would be the dateline, reading "Whitehall, September 25, 1708" however over half of this is trimmed off (see). This was a pivotal battle in the 1708 campaign of the War of Spanish Succession.
Verifying the date is the issue of "The London Gazette" dated September 23 - 27, 1708 which was attached to this broadside and is offered separately. It was typical that such "extra" editions were published between the dates of the regular editions. Both the newspaper and the broadside have datelined reports after the noted dates so it is obvious they were published a few days after their dateline.
The complete text of the broadside is headed: "Journal from the Camp Before Lisle." with the full text shown in the photos below. At the very bottom of this broadside is: "Printed by J. Tonson at Grays-Inn Gate. 1708." The back side of this sheet is blank.
Measures 7 1/4 by 11 3/4 inches, a bit of browning near the right margin, otherwise very nice.
