THE COLUMBIAN MAGAZINE, Philadelphia, May, 1788 Among the articles are: "Extracts...Respecting a Resemblance Between the Traditions and Customers of the Natives of America and Those of the Ancient Jews" which takes 2 1/2 pages; a continued article: "A Tract on the Unreasonableness of the Law of England in Regard to Wives" "An Account of a Singular Insurrection Among the Indians, to Support the Claim of an Indian Woman to the Territory of the Creeks" taking 5 1/2 pages; "An Answer to a Circumstance on Which some Writers, in Defence of the Slave Trade, Have Founded Much of its Legality".Near the back is: "American Intelligence" with mention of Capt. Luke Day, a leader in the Shays' Rebellion; "His Excellency John Hancock has three quarters of the votes for governor...". Also: "A letter from Baltimore, dated April 28, says, 'Our Convention ave adopted the New Government by a great majority of votes, 63 to 11. To-morrow it is to be ratified in form."

Complete in 60 pages, 5 by 8 inches, various foxing spots, a bit irregular at the spine, generally good condition.
This title has the honor of being the first successful American magazine, having begun in September, 1786 and lasting until December, 1792. Although many titles existed earlier, none enjoyed the success of lasting beyond a few issues or a couple of years.
