THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, England, October, 1797 Among the many articles under "Review of New Publications" is: "A Letter to the Infamous Tom Paine, in Answer to His Letter to Gen. Washington, by Peter Porcupine." this is followed by: "Eposulatory Letter to George Washington, of Mount Vernon, in Virginia, on His Continuing to be a Proprietor of Slaves, by Edward Rushton".
Near the back is news headed: "America, West Indies, etc." with much from the Caribbean, but also a report from Philadelphia concerning the spread of the Yellow Fever (see).
Included are three plates called for.
Complete in 86 pages, full title/contents page with an engraving of St. John's Gate, 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches, nice condition.

This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
