September 17, 1776

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, Sept. 17, 1776 

* General Benedict Arnold & George Washington

Inside includes an item noting in part: "An Officer...employed in the attack of Sullivan's Island...informs us that the fort at that place was absolutely abandoned by the Provincials, but that Gen. Lee coming up a the head of a reinforcement of 800 men, met the runaways, drove them back again into the fort...adds that several of the deserters were executed immediately..." (see).
The back page has several reports, including: "...mentions that a ship arrived there reports that New York was taken, & that Gen. Washington had left the party of the provincials." and a letter from Quebec includes: "...about 30 soldiers with 3000 Indians & some few Canadians marched to attack a body of rebels posted at a place called the Cedars..." and further on: "...Soon after this agreement a Major of the rebel army, with 100 men...also fell into the hands of Capt. Foster's Indians; after which the rebel Gen. Arnold with a considerable body of men appeared...Mr. Arnold, to save the prisoners, entered into an agreement that on condition of their being suffered to return home, a like number of equal degree out of those taken at St. John's and Chamblee should be a certain day be returned to Quebec...hey directed their General, Washington, to send a copy of these resolves to Generals Howe and Burgoyne, well knowing General Carleton would not receive them by flags of truce..." with more (see).
Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.
