NEW YORK TIMES, May 22, 1881

* American Red Cross created
* Clara Barton

The front page has a very significant report on the establishment of the American Red Cross. The article is headed: "The Red Cross" "Efforts To Establish An Organization in the United States". With a dateline of "Washington, May 21", the article begins: "At a meeting held this evening, & which was attended by many prominent citizens & those actively interested in beneficent organizations, a constitution was reported by a committee...which was adopted as the basis of an organization to be known as the Red Cross Society...Miss Clara Barton, who was identified with sanitary & hospital work during the civil war, and conspicuous during the Franco-Prussian war as one of the Red Cross representatives, read a paper strongly supported by extracts from official reports showing the scope & efficiency of the Red Cross societies...The United States Government was represented at the Geneva convention of 1854, which was the initiative meeting of the Red Cross..." and much more.
Note that the internet on the history of the American Red Cross notes the date of creation as May 21, the same date as the dateline of this report.
A very significant report on the founding of this iconic & respected volunteer organization.
