RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, June 27, 1864 A nice newspaper from the capital of the Confederacy, the city to which all war reports would flow. The front page has "The War News" which begins: "It was reported early yesterday morning that a great battle was going on near Petersburg & that the Yankees were shelling the city vigorously..." with more. Included in this report is a letter signed in type: R. E. Lee, General, concerning this battle (see photos), followed by yet another letter signed by him with an update of the events (see).
Also on the front page are: "The Fredericksburg Hostages" "City Intelligence" "Yankee Impudence Rebuked" "The Fighting About Petersburg" "The Enemy Dislodged from the Railroad--Another Flank Movement--500 Prisoners captured--Operations of the Armies" with various subheads. Even more war-related reports as well.
The back page has the always interesting editorial, this one beginning; "The activity of the enemy's cavalry has,from the beginning, annoyed and injured the people of Virginia beyond measure..." Also on the back page; "Latest From the North" "The War In Virginia" "Grant on the Southside--The Prospect--Richmond Must Fall--What Will Become of Jefferson Davis" "Address of General McClellan" "Sheridan!" "The War in Louisiana--Retreat of Banks From Alexandria--Affairs in New Orleans" and other items as well.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a one column masthead, typical from the South as most paper mills were in the North, and in very nice and clean condition.
