Page 2 has a: "...Letter from Philadelphia, July 5" which includes in part: "...In contradiction to every report relative to the capture of New York, the public may rest assured that no advices were...received...of any engagement having happened between the Regulars and the Provincials at New York. It is said that the Congress have given orders to the provincial troops in case the British forces should be likely to prove victorious at New York to set fire to that city...The forces under Lord Cornwallis & Gen. Clinton consist of about 3000 men..." with more.
An inside page has a letter from Staten Island which includes: "The Congress have for some time past turned perfect tyrants. Their bank bills are now refused by their best friends...This day General Howe received a letter from General Burgoyne wherein he acquaints him that he is entering the back settlements of New York so that we shall soon have the rebels between two fires. Washington & Putnam command the forces there...General Howe will act on the defensive till the Generals Carleton and Burgoyne arrive with their army from Canada near to New York..." with more. Also on the same page is an article on Revolutionary War-related situations in South Carolina.
The bkpg. has a brief note that: "...a letter is received from New York which mentions Dr. Franklin's being assiduously employed in bringing about a reconciliation between Great Britain and her colonies."
Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.
