THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, Aug. 3, 1776

* Independence from Great Britain - Patrick Henry
* Reverend John Wesley - Revolutionary War original

Page 2 contains a letter concerning events at Quebec and Montreal (see photo). Another page has a lengthy letter signed in type by: John Wesley, and yet another has a letter from Lt. gov. Trumbull which includes: "...we have just heard that Gen. Carleton has this day a meeting with 500 Indian chiefs, friends to government they have brought in four rebel scalps with them, so you find that work is begun, which is horrid, but must have a vast effect on the Provincials...the rebels are drove quite out of Canada." (see)
The back page has much great material, including an "...act repealing an act for securing to his Majesty the allegiance of his subjects (in) Rhode Island..." which takes most of a column, plus another report notes: "...the original plan of Richard Henry Lee, Patrick Henry & others of the faction has a length taken place. The convention of this once happy colony have declared themselves 'independent of Great Britain', and have passed some resolutions for confiscating the estates of 'the deserters of their country's liberties'..." with more (see photos).  A reference to the historic May 15 meeting in Williamsburg wherein the Virginia Declaration of Rights was adopted, and rare to find period mention of Patrick Henry in a newspaper. The same page has part of a letter from General Lee to General Washington mentioning his plight at New York: "...I am now deeply entrenched with 18,000 fine troops before New York. A good battery is erected about 5 miles from our entrenchments where there are 900 Indians & 1600 Provincials..." with more.
Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.
