Houston Confederate newspaper reporting the 2nd Battle of Galveston...
Item # 643716
January 5, 1863
THE HOUSTON TRI-WEEKLY TELEGRAPH, January 5, 1863
* Very rare issue from the Southwest Confederacy
Newspapers from Texas are very uncommon, particularly from before or during the Civil War period. Here is an issue from the midst of the war, the earliest war-dated issues we have offered in many years.
Pages 2, 3 & 4 are entirely taken up with reporting on the Second Battle of Galveston fought January 1 and which was a victory for the Confederates, forcing the Union troops out of the city (see hyperlink for much more). Terrific to have this lengthy & very detailed account in this newspaper as Galveston was essentially the port city for Houston. Rarely have a seen a newspaper with nearly three-quarters of the text taken up with details of a single battle. An exceptional issue.
The front page has: "Volunteers On Bayou City" "Casualties On the Neptune" "Letter From the Rangers" and many more brief war-related reports. There are several slave of "Reward" related advertisements.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, some rubbing at the folds & margins, some discrete archival mends to inside pages, minor loss at the spine, some very minor rubbing loss at folds, scattered foxing.
