July 19, 1861

WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, July 19, 1861

* Rare Confederate title from the Civil War

This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
The front page has several items relating to the Civil War, with a Confederate perspective, including items headed: "Loan for the Defence of the Confederates States" "The Provisional Congress" which met in Richmond; "Ball and Shot" "More Disaffection" and some other items.
The inside pages have much on the war including items headed: "Be Not Deceived" "Lookout For Traitors" "Late News" "North Carolina Army Items" "A Visit to the Camp" "Confederate Treasury Notes" "Lincoln's Message" "More Louisiana Troops Coming" and more. Plus the back page has: "Thirteenth Regiment" "Dissatisfaction Among the Yankee Troops" "President Davis" and a poem: "Yankee National Hymn" among other items.
Complete in four pages, the front page is more lightly inked although all is readable. There is a lengthy repaired tear to the front leaf causing no loss of readability. Scattered foxing throughout & some light damp staining at the very top.
