June 25, 1864

RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, June 25, 1864

* Siege of Petersburg, Virginia begins

A nice newspaper from the capital of the Confederacy, the city to which all war reports would flow. The front page has "The War News" which begins: "From seven till ten o'clock yesterday morning a heavy cannonade was heard in the direction of Petersburg..." with more, including subheads: "The Latest From Hunter--Lautz & His Raiders--Sheridan & His Gang--Hampton Harasses Them". Also on the front page: "Much Later From the North" which takes most of a column, and "City Intelligence" "The Fighting Around Petersburg--Further Particulars of the Flanking of Hancock's Corps--Movements of the Two Armies" "From The Armies In Georgia" "Latest From Petersburg" and other smaller items.
The back page has the always interesting editorial, which seems to focus on the efforts of Grant towards Petersburg. Also on the back page: "Additional From the North--The Attack on Petersburg--View of Petersburg from the Captured Fortifications--Strength of the Rebel Fortifications--Details of the Battle of the Fifteenth Instant" "Why Grant Moved to the Southside--Its Military Advantages..." "The Standing of the Negro Troops" "Still Later From the North" and a letter signed: "A Sharpshooter, McGowan's Brigade", as well as other smaller items.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a one column masthead (typical from the South as most paper mills were in the North), 17 by 24 inches, and in very nice, clean condition.
