January 24, 1862

DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, January 24, 1862

* Battle of Mill Springs - Kentucky
* From the capital of the Confederacy

A very nice newspaper from the capital of the Confederacy, the city to which all Civil War reports would eventually be sent. Half of the front page is taken up with ads, the other half having various Civil War reports including: "The Burnside Expedition - The Great Yankee Fleet" this report taking over two columns. Also on the ftpg: "Another Expedition Against the South" "A Yankee Pardon & a War Sermon" "France & the Blockade" and a few other smaller items.
Page 2 includes the always interesting editorial, this one beginning: "We are the chroniclers of evil tidings this morning. Our arms have sustained a melancholy reverse in a considerable battle in Southern Kentucky..." with much more (see for portions). This is referencing the Battle of Somerset, or Mill Spring. Also on pg. 2: "The Latest Northern News--Movements & Spirit of the War", "Reverse of Our Arms in Kentucky" which is on Mill Spring (Somerset); and much reporting from the "Legislature Of Virginia.
Page 3 continues with reports from the legislature, & also has: "Latest Northern News" and a few smaller items. The back page is mostly taken up with various Acts of the Confederate Congress, many relating to the Civil War.
Complete as as 4 page newspaper, never bound nor trimmed, some light rubbing to the front page affects ads only, otherwise rather nice.
