August 26, 1852

THE NATIONAL ERA, Washington, D.C., Aug. 26, 1852

* Harriet Beecher Stowe

This newspaper is forever linked to the best-selling novel of the 19th century: "Uncle Tom's Cabin", for the book was originally released as a 40 week serial in this anti-slavery newspaper beginning in June, 1851. It was the newspaper's publisher who encouraged Stowe to produce the work in book form, and it is common consensus that the book had much to do with popularizing sentiment which lead to the Civil War.
The back page has a small advertisement: "50,000 Copies Sold In Eight Weeks! - Uncle Tom's Cabin: Or, Life Among The Lowly, by Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe..." with a bit of detail (see). Also on the bkpg. is: "The Fugitive Slave Law - Speech of Chs. Durkee of Wisconsin, in the House of Representatives" which is continued from a previous issue. This report takes over half of the page.
Four pages, nice condition. The folder size noted is for the issue folded in half.
