April 16, 1912

THE MONROE JOURNAL, North Carolina, April 16 and 23, 1912

* RMS Titanic sinking (1st & 2nd reports)

This is a pair of weekly issues.
In a newspaper which had small, one column heads for even notable events, this one column report at the top of the front page of the April 16 issue has a one column heading with: "Fearful Sea Disaster" and "World's Largest Steamship And Many Lives Lost" with even smaller subheads (see). But obviously this headline is far smaller than most newspapers of the day. Nonetheless this is a first report of one of the more notable tragedies of the 20th century, the text taking just 5 inches as not much of the detail was known at the time.
The issue of April 23 has just over a full column taken up with the: "Late Facts About the Awful Wreck" with the small headline which was typical for this newspaper.
Both issues are complete in 8 pages, are cleanly cut at the blank spine with ample margin, have a few minor edge tears and a small address label in the masthead, light browning, generally good condition. Should be handled with care.
