Death of General John Hunt Morgan... In a Confederate newspaper...

Item # 643359

September 6, 1864

RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, Sept. 6, 1864

* Death of John Hunt Morgan
* In a Confederate title from it's capital

The back page of this issue contains a headline "General Morgan" which begins with "General John H. Morgan has been relieved of the command of the Department of Southwestern Virginia, and he is to be court martialed for going into Kentucky last spring without orders of General Bragg..." and then contains a post-script message "P. S. - Since the above was written, we learn the authentick information was received in this city last night that the enemy attacked Greenville on Sunday, killing General Morgan and capturing all of his staff... So has died one of the noblest Southern soldiers and gentlemen. Perhaps death was not unwelcome to him at this time; for he has been so hunted up and down by official enmity since his escape from captivity, that his restoration to liberty has been a problematical benefit."
Other war news, a speech of Mr. Lincoln, and a $4,500 reward for slaves ad are within the issue.
A single-sheet issue with a piece missing from the lower left margin which does affect one word of text in the editorial, a couple lite foxing spots, otherwise in good condition.
