* Jefferson David proclamation
A newspaper from the capital of the Confederate states, the city through which all news reports flowed during the Civil War.
The front page is entirely taken up with ads & notices and also includes a: "Proclamation By the President" which begins: "An enemy waging war in a manner violative of the usages of civilized nations has invaded our country...he has declared his purpose to reduce us to submission..." with more, & is signed in type: Jefferson Davis (see).
Pages 2 & 3 have much on the war with items headed: "Movements & Spirit of the War" which is lengthy and includes many subheads including: "Negro Prisoners at Camp Chase, Ohio" "The Fall of New Orleans" "Tennessee" "The Skirmish at Bridgeport" "Death Among the Fort Donelson Prisoners" "Emancipation in Missouri" "A Bivouac Near Yorktown" "The Yankee Army on the Peninsula..." "and much more. Other items are headed: "Important From Southwestern Virginia" "Our River Defences" "Crossing the Line" "Lincoln's Emancipation Scheme--What is Thought of It In England" "English Views of the War" "The Legislature of Virginia" and other items as well. Page 2 has the always interesting editorial, which includes in part: "The reports from the Peninsula are encouraging. True, our army have fallen back 'without a fight'. True, our heavy artillery are abandoned at discretion & are a dead loss; but the compensation for it surpasses these in value. General McClellan has 40,000 sick men on his hands...The Yankees are used to in-door life. At home they devote their 'time & talents' to shoemaking, ready-made clothing work, loom-tending in factories...Camp life, therefore, is at war with all their habitudes..." with more (see for portions). Page 2 also prints the same: "Proclamation by the President" which appears on the front page (see above).
Most of the back page is taken up with a large number of Acts of the Confederate Congress, many relating to the war. Complete as a 4 page newspaper, never bound nor trimmed, in very nice, clean condition.
