NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, Dec. 3, 1814 Two pages are taken up with a nice & detailed account headed:"Attack Upon Baltimore - British Account" as taken from the London Gazette Extraordinary.
Included is the: "Return of killed & wounded in the action with the enemy near Baltimore on the 12th September, 1814."
Further on is: "Events of the War" which also includes the: "Proclamation to the Free Colored Inhabitants of Louisiana" signed in type by: Andrew Jackson. In this proclamation, Jackson, who needed to augment and strengthen his forces, called upon the free Blacks of Louisiana, which of course was a slave state, to answer the appeal of their country. In the appeal he confessed that the policy of the United States in barring Negroes from the service had been a mistaken one. It begins: "Through a mistaken policy you have heretofore been deprived of a participation in the glorious struggle for national rights in which our country is engaged. this no longer shall exist..." and much more.
The back page has a report on the naval action between the U.S. ship Wasp and the British ship Avon (not identified as such).
Complete in 16 pages, some lite scattered foxing, otherwise in very good condition.
As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
