IAPI OAYE, THE WORD CARRIER, published by the Dakota Mission in Dakota Indian territory (later South Dakota), June, 1880

* Very rare title

This very uncommon newspaper was founded in 1871 with the first three pages in the Dakota Indian language, and the last page in English. In 1884 the editor decided to divide & separately publish the Dakota and English language material, titled separately "Iapi Oaye" and "Word Carrier". This issue precedes that event and carries both names in the masthead (see).
The entire ftpg. is a print of "Kunsitku Wicayawaste - Grandmother's Blessing." As noted above, pages 2 - 5 are in the Dakota Indian language.  Pages 6-8 are in English, with the bkpg. including the address of the publisher, the Rev. A. L. Riggs, at the Santee Agency, Nebraska.
Eight pages, 11 by 15 1/2 inches, nice condition.
