THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, November, 1742 There is a nice article on finding a Northwest passage to China which reports on explorations through the northern regions of present-day Canada. It includes a letter datelined: "From on Board his Majesty's Ship the Furnace, in Churchill River, North America, June 21, 1742". Another interesting article has: "Extract of the Exact Description of the House of Ice Erected at St. Petersburgh in January, 1740 and of its Furniture..." which takes over 2 1/2 pgs. (see for the beginning).
Among other articles in this issue are: "Our Folly in Attempting to Sustain the Balance of Europe" "Computation of the Damages done to Great Britain by Spain" "The King Can do Wrong", a full pg. sheet of music titled: "The Modest Question, set by Mr. Russel", and much more.
Near the back is the: "Historical Chronicle" with news from England & other parts of Europe. Included is a brief note: "Advice is likewise come that the Spaniards abandoned Georgia Aug. 27 last." There are also reports headed: "Extract of a Letter from Jamaica" & yet another headed: "Extract of a Letter from New England" with a Boston dateline.
No maps or plates are called for.
Complete in 56 pages, never-trimmed margins, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate, 5 1/2 by 8 3/4 inches, bit of browning in the titlepg. margins, very nice condition.
A very nice pre-Revolutionary War magazine from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
